Vladimir Putin convenes Security Council meeting to discuss situation in annexed Ukrainian territories

Russian President Vladimir Putin will today chair a meeting of the Russian Federation's Security Council to discuss the security situation in the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Herson and Zaporozhye, which Russia illegally annexed last September, although it only partially controls them on the ground, Agerpres reports.

According to the Kremlin, issues related to respect for laws, public order and security in the territories will be examined. According to the same announcement, the main speaker at the meeting will be Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokolsev.

Martial law has been in force in the four Ukrainian regions partially occupied by Russia since October, which Moscow claims is necessary to protect the civilian population from attacks by the Ukrainian army. To strengthen security in the annexed territories, Putin has also decreed the creation of territorial defence units.
