Russian jets intercept MQ-9 Reaper and Bayraktar TB2 drones over Black Sea
Russia's defence ministry said Tuesday that it sent two fighter jets to intercept two drones over the Black Sea. The drones were identified as an MQ-9 Reaper and a Bayraktar TB2, but the ministry did not specify to whom they belonged, Agerpres reports.
The ministry said the jets were sent to prevent a possible violation of Russia's border and to block the electronic reconnaissance mission of the drones. The drones reportedly changed course and left the area after the jets were dispatched.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Black Sea region. Russia has been conducting military exercises in the area in recent months, and there have been several incidents involving Russian and Western aircraft.
In March, a US Reaper drone crashed into the Black Sea after colliding with a Russian fighter jet. In May, Moscow said it intercepted four US strategic bombers over the Baltic Sea in two separate incidents.
The increased tensions in the Black Sea are a source of concern for NATO countries, who have accused Russia of aggressive behaviour. The alliance has said it is committed to maintaining freedom of navigation in the region.
