Ursula von der Leyen welcomes the recognition of the Romanian language as an official language for the ethnic minority in Ukraine
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, qualified as "good news" Ukraine's decision to recognize the Romanian language for the Romanian ethnic minority, which both Chisinau and Bucharest presented as the result of a joint effort between Romania and the Republic of Moldova at the level of trilateral cooperation with Ukraine, writes Caleaeuropeană.ro.
The first joint meeting of the governments of Romania and Ukraine, which took place on Wednesday, in Kiev, is truly "a historic moment", declared Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, during a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart, Denys Shmyhal, moment in which the head of the Government from Bucharest announced that "the official language for the Romanian minority in Ukraine is the Romanian language".
The measure was adopted in the context of Ukraine's obligation to fulfill the criteria for joining the European Union, one of the criteria also referring to the rights of national minorities.
The decision was also welcomed by the president of the state Maia Sandu.
"I welcome the joint statement of President Zelenski and Prime Minister Ciolacu, confirming the Romanian language as the official language for the Romanian-speaking community in Ukraine.
