Maia Sandu and Janis Mazeiks, in front of the people gathered at the "Celebrating European Moldova" event
The door to the European Union was opened to the Republic of Moldova thanks to the efforts of all people of good faith, those who fought for independence, who fought for justice and against corruption. This is the message of President Maia Sandu, which she delivered to the people gathered at the "Celebrating European Moldova" event. The head of state stated that from now on, we have two major tasks to fulfill.
"Let us firstly build a truly European state that truly cares for its citizens, and secondly, let us build a truly European society, where people live in harmony, where people respect each other and where all people contribute to the common good . I want to thank the Member States of the European Union for trusting us and helping us build a European state and for helping us face all the challenges. I want to thank Romania, which is our lawyer".
For his part, the ambassador of the European Union, Janis Mazeiks, said that two years ago EU integration was a dream for many citizens, but now the leaders of the community block have firmly conveyed that the future of the Republic of Moldova is in the EU
"The decision to start the accession negotiations was taken on Thursday at the political level by the leaders of the European countries, but they were based on the European Commission's report which noted the progress made by Moldova in the key areas - justice reform, the fight against corruption and the rule of law. The decision to start accession negotiations reflects both the determination of the Moldovans and the commitment of the European Union to fulfill its promises. I hope that now that it is increasingly clear that the Republic of Moldova will become a member of the EU, European integration will be a national consensus".
After the European Council's vote on the start of negotiations for our country's accession to the European Union, our country is about to start negotiations, a process that involves the adoption of European Union legislation, especially judicial, administrative and economic reform. Once the negotiations are completed, the candidate country can become a member of the European Union, this being the last step in the accession process.
