President Maia Sandu's Easter Diplomacy Promotes Unity and Peace
On Friday, May 3rd, President Maia Sandu held separate meetings with the Metropolitan of Moldova, Vladimir, and the Metropolitan of Bessarabia, Petru.
These discussions unfolded within the context of the Holy Easter Holidays.
According to the Presidency, during these meetings, the head of state emphasised the significance of Easter, conveying the joy and hope it instils in the hearts of believers. Additionally, she underscored the importance of unity, empathy, and the pursuit of good deeds.
President Maia Sandu also urged both metropolitans to actively contribute to the maintenance of peace, not only within our country but also globally.
The Metropolitan of Moldova and the Metropolitan of Bessarabia have been embroiled in a dispute over their canonical status since the declaration of independence of the Republic of Moldova. However, the conflict has intensified following Russia's intervention in Ukraine. As a result, over the past six months, the Metropolitan of Bessarabia has garnered the support of approximately 50 parishes from within the Russian Church. The dissatisfaction among priests who transitioned from the Metropolitan of Moldova to the Metropolitan of Bessarabia primarily stems from the Moscow Patriarchate's overt backing of Russian aggression.
